Veterinary services

This is an unconventional practice. My focus is on helping animals (and the people who love them) live healthier, happier lives. Over the past 35 years I've been following my own eccentric interests and have developed skills in the following areas of practice...

These are the things I most love to do, and where I'm best equipped to help. We are blessed in this area to have many conventional vets who do a wonderful job with the conventional stuff, and I'm very glad that I can leave the rest to them.

Please note that I do not offer emergency services. If you are urgently in need of an equine vet, please see my contact page for a list of equine/large animal vets who work in this area.

Hendra policy

I have no restrictions on Hendra virus (HeV) vaccination status. I will see horses who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is 'overdue', 'lapsed', or unknown.

That said, I will comply with government regulations regarding the safety of humans and other horses in potential HeV cases. Testing for HeV in suspect cases is the financial responsibility of the horse owner. (Queensland's Biosecurity Sciences Laboratory currently covers the cost of laboratory testing in suspect cases, but it is the horse owner's responsibility to pay for transporting samples to the lab.)

I also offer HeV antibody testing of healthy horses to determine the horse's HeV immune status. It is my hope that equine vets will start accepting proof of HeV-specific antibodies as evidence that the horse poses little risk to others — i.e., proof of immunity as an alternative to proof of vaccination. (There is a laboratory charge for this test.)

For a 'deep dive' into this issue, please read my web articles, Hendra: why not just go ahead and vaccinate?,  Hendra antibody tests, and Ivermectin and the Hendra virus.
